A Framework For School Improvement
Quite frequently we hear people say things like, “We need to put that student in MTSS,” or “We can work on that during MTSS time”. The problem with these statements is they make MTSS into something separate. In order for a Multi Tiered System of Support to be implemented well it must be the way we do business at our schools. In reality all students are part of MTSS because they all receive core instruction. And, there is not a specific time of day for MTSS because it encompasses all of the instruction and intervention provided to students.
Many people will say, “We are working on our MTSS process.” The true definition of a process is that it has a beginning and an ending. MTSS is the framework schools use to support students and improve their school performance. This framework is designed to support students with academics, behavior, SEL and attendance. Since there will always be areas of need at schools to be improved, MTSS is not a linear process with a starting point and an ending point.
A successfully implemented Multi Tiered System of Support involves six critical components. Leadership, Infrastructure/Building Capacity, Communication and Collaboration, Problem Solving Process, Multiple Tiers of Instruction/Intervention and Data Evaluation. All of the work involved in these components have to be built in to the culture of a school.
Matt and Alison of EduPuzzle Partners specialize in working with school and district leaders to assist with these critical components. Get in touch with us today to find out more about our coaching and consulting options. You can also check out these resources for more information:
